BHP marks milestone with Jansen headframe installation

Diversified miner BHP has reached a major milestone at its Jansen potash project in Saskatchewan, with the safe completion and installation of the new production headframe.

Standing more than 50 m tall – the height of a 16-storey building – and weighing about 2 000 t, the headframe was fabricated largely in Canada. Walters Steel in Southern Ontario and SaskArc in Oxbow, Saskatchewan, produced most of the steel before it was shipped to site. Installation was carried out with engineering and construction partners Hatch, Bantrel, Ledcor and Mammoet, supported by a team of more than 600 people.

The new production headframe replaces the temporary sinking headframe erected in 2012 to support initial shaft sinking and lining. Unlike its predecessor, the permanent structure has been designed for the demands of full-scale production, with an internal stair tower and permanent elevator system to improve efficiency and safety by enabling easier access to multiple levels.

“The new production headframe gets us ready for critical structural and operational activities. Jansen is on the path to deliver Canadian potash to the world, and this is one of the largest structural achievements since the project began. Huge kudos to the incredible teams at Jansen for the precision, collaboration, and care they bring, every step of the way,” said BHP asset president potash Karina Gistelinck.

With the headframe in place, Jansen remains on track for first production in mid-2027. Upcoming work includes finalising the configuration, installing ropes, and commissioning hoisting systems.

“This is a moment worth celebrating. Our teams did this safely with zero recordable incidents. They put in place this new headframe which will support our operations for the next 75 years in the life of the mine,” said project director Tony Wieczorek.

Potash is a key input for fertilisers and global food security, with Saskatchewan the world’s leading potash-producing jurisdiction. The Jansen development highlights Canadian innovation, strong local partnerships and the contribution of hundreds of skilled workers.
